I always wondered why the "center" of the strip makes such a big deal. I have never heard anyone say, "hey we stayed at the Mirage and never left the property because we were in the perfect location".
When we're in Vegas we go to so many hotels on and off the strip. Freemont st. Local spots, you name it we want to visit. Stay where YOU feel most comfortable at.

The international spotlight is always on us. When you view the city crime maps, the area behind the Stratosphere does have its share of high crime rates, mostly domestic violence and disturbing the peace.
Pickpockets, disturbing the peace, etc…. As with any part of a tourist town or tourist corridor, you need to play it safe.
I'm one of the few people who here who likes the Stratosphere. Mostly for me it's because of the rates I prefer to spend my money on gambling and entertainment.
The first time I stayed there I was in town for a dance competition and had to stay a week with 2 teenagers and it was perfect for us. We did have a rental car so getting anywhere was easy.
Last year I went solo and stayed there again but didn't have a rental car. I planned my times away from the hotel carefully and ended up with just a few taxi trips 3 I think.
I was going to take the bus but changed my mind because I just felt safer taking taxis when I was out at night by myself and the slots had been kind to me no major wins but wasn't going through my entire bankroll every day, so didn't mind spending the cash.
I'm going next month and this time I'm staying there on my first ever comped room and I'm truly not worried about the distance.
I'm planning on taking the bus apparently stops right outside my hotel which is handy. Thanks for all you inputs.

Anything that we should look out for? The monorail is quite a hike from Strat to the closed Saraha. Not exactly the nicest area, either, though I don't think its truly unsafe.
You really don't want to venture away from the Strat, though. Other's have said there are some areas nearby that are truly unsafe. No personal experience, fortunately.
To get around without a car take the Deuce or SDX bus. They're half the price of taking the monorail. Stops right outside Strat, though different spots for these two buses.
With kids in tow, Orleans is a better choice. A better choice in general vs. Strat, IMHO. Stayed at both. Orleans has more and better food choices and has activities for kids KidTyme day care, movies, arcade, bowling.
Strat has the rides and tower, but if you want those, you can visit the place. Gambling is better at Orleans than Strat if you're looking for low-roller fun like me.
The Strat is near one of the few actually dangerous neighborhoods of Vegas that are anywhere close to a tourist area.
But you'll never go there unless you decided to randomly wander and didn't turn back when you saw where you were headed. LV Blvd, which you may want to walk down to the strip, isn't unsafe, but some folks might feel uneasy with that walk at night.
